Story Behind the Name

We have gotten the question on several occasions, "Where did you come up with the name Third Day Farm?" 

We thought we'd take the time to share how we came up with the meaning behind the name of our farm!

When my parents (Matt and Beth) purchased the farm in 2014, it was running as an organic, pasture-raised dairy farm. There was also a garden and other neat aspects of this farm.  When Matt and Beth purchased the farm with the intention of farming regeneratively, the goal was to create healthy food by focusing on the health of the animals through healthy land and soil. 

Shortly after, Matt sent a text out to his four kids to brainstorm some name ideas for the newly acquired farm.  Some began tossing name ideas around when Tyler (Matt and Beth's son) came up with the idea of "Third Day Farm". 

As each of us casted our vote - and it was a clear winner.

Genesis 1:9 says:

  "And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gather to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so.  God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, "Let the land product vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so.  The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds.  And God saw that it was good.  And there was evening, and there was morning - the third day.

The Bible uses the number three so many times that it makes us take a closer look at its significance.  If you want to dive into other stories where the number three (or third) is in the Bible, here are a few (but there are SO many more!):

• God provided a sacrificial ram for Abraham in Isaac's place on the third day (Genesis 22:1-19)
• Jonah in the belly of a big fish and was spit out on the third day (Jonah 1-4)
• Jesus's raised back to life on the third day after crucifixion (Luke 24)
  

In the events above, the Third Day symbolizes God creating new life where there once was death. The number 3 represents completeness, wholeness, resurrection, and harmony in the Bible. 

It is no surprise that in the Creation Story, we see on the third day God created LIFE to sprout, or rise up from the ground in the form of plants and vegetation. He called it good. 

Seeing the value in what God created and called good on that "Third Day", it is our goal to steward the land and life that is on the land in a way that honors the Lord.  When we focus on regenerative farming we strive to work alongside nature and its patterns to bring life to the soil to raise a healthy animal to produce a healthy product.
